Like the rest of Disney's original series, new installments are expected to be released weekly every Wednesday. Disney Plus will premiere its Obi-Wan Kenobi series on May 25. Obi-Wan Kenobi is expected to be a single-season miniseries of six hour-long episodes. Season 3 of The Mandalorian is also in the works. While Disney Plus has leaned on high-profile Marvel series lately to stoke interest in its service's exclusive originals, it was a Star Wars original, The Mandalorian, that put Disney Plus' original series spinoffs on the map. The Obi-Wan announcement came the same day as the most recent Star Wars franchise entry, The Book of Boba Fett, wrapped up its series finale. Also in the cast, playing undisclosed roles, are Moses Ingram, Kumail Nanjiani, Indira Varma, Rupert Friend, O'Shea Jackson Jr., Sung Kang, Simone Kessell and Benny Safdie. In the series, McGregor and Christensen are joined by Joel Edgerton and Bonnie Piesse, who appeared in the prequels as the family who raised young Luke Skywalker on the twin-sunned desert planet Tatooine. At the trilogy's climax, Anakin became more machine than man and turned to the Dark Side as the Emperor's acolyte Darth Vader while his children Luke and Leia were hidden from him. The series is set 10 years after Revenge of the Sith, in which Kenobi grievously wounded his troubled apprentice Anakin Skywalker. You can catch Obi-Wan Kenobi episode 4 on Wednesday (June 8), starting at 3. A poster was also revealed at the same time, showing McGregor's older Obi-Wan striding the shifting sands of Tatooine with his lightsaber in hand. Episodes 1 and 2 of Obi-Wan Kenobi arrived on Disney Plus on May 27, and episode 3 hit the streaming service on June 1. The news of the show's release date was a nugget nestled in Disney's call to discuss its latest financial results Wednesday. The pair last faced off in the Star Wars prequel trilogy of movies nearly two decades ago. Though details are still sparse, we feel happy to have gotten Obi-Wan Kenobi‘s release date. But we don’t know too much more about that yet. At the time, we glimpsed a fight between Obi-Wan and Vader in concept art. But Obi-Wan is dedicated to his task of keeping Luke safe. In the reel, Deborah Chow, the director of the Obi-Wan Kenobi series, shared that even being a Jedi wasn’t safe at the time of this Star Wars series. A previously released sizzle real for the show mentioned this would be a dark time for Obi-Wan. But it doesn’t say much more than that about what’s to come, though it does evoke a certain feeling of loneliness. The poster, of course, shares Obi-Wan Kenobi‘s release date. Disney+ also revealed the first poster for the series. Many Star Wars devotees have waited a long time to see it fleshed out on our screens. The relationship between Anakin and Obi-Wan is a fan-favorite. We can’t wait to learn more about the characters they will play. Additionally, “joining the cast are Moses Ingram, Joel Edgerton, Bonnie Piesse, Kumail Nanjiani, Indira Varma, Rupert Friend, O’Shea Jackson Jr., Sung Kang, Simone Kessell, and Benny Safdie.” An excellent sounding cast. So we know Vader will have a prominent role. And, of course, the series will see Hayden Christensen return in the role of Darth Vader. We definitely know what relationship will define this new story.
